Giving - FINANCIAL SUPPORT

"All things come from you, O Lord, and of your own do we give you." (1 Chronicles 29.14)

These words are taken from King David's prayer at the consecration of the Temple and recall the people of Israel's understanding that we have nothing of our own - only what God has given. In response to God’s gracious generosity, Christians are called to give towards his mission in the world.

Christians have always regarded the "tithe" (one tenth of income) as being the standard level for giving, and the Church of England recommends that half of this amount should be given to (and through) the local church.

To keep our three churches open and an active Christian ministry alive in our parishes will cost about £108,000 in 2014, that’s £9,000 per month or £2,077 per week. This amount excludes all but the most routine maintenance on our historic buildings. These days, all of this money has to come from generous donors who wish to give thanks to God by supporting his work.

If you wish to support Christ’s mission in this parish and ensure that our historic churches remain open, the principal ways in which you can give are:

Parish Giving Scheme: This is our preferred way of giving regular support to the parish.

Other Giving: Alternative ways of helping us financially.

PARISH GIVING SCHEME (“PGS”) NEWS.

From the Bishop of Lewes:

“Churches are built on vision. If they close, it is often because of lack of money. Money is a two-edged sword: it’s an essential re-source for effective mission, but lack of money in a community or a household can generate a lot of worry. This is why our diocese is so committed to the Parish Giving Scheme. While not pretending to be a magic solution to parish financial worries, it is such a help to the management of regular donor income that I cannot help but commend it to you. The diocese has provided local parishes with this powerful mechanism as a sign of our commitment to Christian growth in local communities. Please use it!”

Where does the money go?

It costs about £108,000 a year to keep our churches open and resource the church’s ministry. The main expense categories (excluding one-off major works to the churches) are:
